Rather than making separate threads for separate games, I though it would be best to just have one thread for the genre.
So, fighting games are pretty good, right? What's your game and system? Who's your main? What do you play on? Are you interested in getting into them? Do you need help with one?
Right now, I'm still putting hours into MK on the PS3. Sektor's still my man and right now I'm just refining my game for and upcoming tournament at the end of January. I've been with Sektor basically since day one, so it's mostly a matter of learning a few rouge match-ups and nailing iaTUs.
I've been thinking of giving SSFIV:AE-2012 a shot, though. My first foray into SSFIV was less than successful, but I'm thinking that now that I've spent a not-insubstantial amount of time with MK (the first fighting game I've taken any type of serious since the Sega Genisis), I know what it means to put work into a game and that I should consider giving it another try. Also, I have a stick now, so I don't have to play a six-button fighter like a crazy person anymore. I wanted to get the options of any SF players first though, since AE seems to have been a rather controversial update.

I'm not a Street Fighter player(I actually hate SF because of how Capcom handles it), but I haven't really heard many bad things about v.2012. Though I would recommend saving your money and buying Soul Calibur 5 at the end of January, but that's my series of choice so of course I recommend it over anything else.

Your avatar reminds me, a fair number of preveiws have hit the various gaming sites for DOA5. It's early, but the reception so far has been positive.

So, I've ordered Soul Calibur 5 and it should arrive in one to two weeks. Is anyone else playing this (besides Dr Tom), or thinking about getting?

For whatever reason, I'm thinking of getting SCV. Not much else for me to spend my money on atm.

Well if you are going to get it, do it now. It's $40 new on Amazon.

Saving my money for Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition. Although I should probably get a ps3 first, huh? At least that way I can finish Red Dead.

Yeah, if you're thinking about getting MKKE, I would recommend getting it for the PS3. That's not just because me and Dr Tom have it for that system, but PSN is still fairly active where as XBL isn't. I can still find randoms fairly easily (though I mostly play people from TYM these days), and all I here is how dead XBL is.

I'd wager that it's because people on XBL are probably playing first person shooters.
I play some fighting games. I like DoA and Soul Calibur, but I usually play against the AI or friends since I don't play competitively.

I don't play a lot of fighting games. I own Mortal Kombat: Deception, and I enjoyed Tekken 5, but I don't own it.

So I've been playing a pretty decent amount of Street Fighter X Tekken over the last few days and so far I'm surprised. I hate Street Fighter, mainly for the previously mentioned handling of the series by Capcom, but also because I just don't like any of the characters. The whole system of how it works doesn't really appeal to me either, but for some reason(probably the inclusion of Lili from Tekken) I've been really enjoying SFxT. I still haven't decided on a tag partner for her yet, but I'm liking the game a lot more than I had thought I was going to.

There are two new trailers up for DoA5, one showing Hitomi and Ayane and the other announcing Akira from the Virtua Fighter series.
I can't say that I'm too impressed by what I've see so far (except the visuals, the game looks phenomenal). DoA has always been a breezy fighting game series, but if these trailers are any indication they are really going for style over substance in this one. Which isn't really a bad thing itself. Might as well make the game interesting to look at, and by all accounts this looks to be the most visually entertaining 3D fighting game ever made. I'm just not sure it that translates into something I want to buy.
As for the guest character; I hate Akira, but give me Vanessa and you've made yourself a sale.
For now, I'll stick to MK and SCV. I'm starting to get the hang of Nightmare and am thinking about starting into Ivy. Also, there's apparently a patch on the way for SCV?

Yes a patch is on the way for SCV, March 21 is the date I've heard. I'm actually hoping it's not a balance patch and just a bug patch. The game has only been out for a month and half. Tech is still being discovered and balance patching now could ultimately lead to some seriously broken stuff once new tech is discovered later

Okay, after spending some time with Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, I may just drop MK. Holy shit, that game actually has a netcode, instead of playing like it's running on a network made out of spaghetti.

Most definitely, but probably tomorrow. I'm still in the dojo with Vanessa trying to figure the game and her out, so I won't make for much competition fora while.

I will say, that you're probably making it harder on yourself by playing Vanessa...The only characters I would say are harder than her to use effectively(as in really play and not just beat on the scrubby masses) are Akira and Goh. But good luck, she is fun and effectively is 2 characters in 1 with her 2 stances

So two major fighting games are coming out this month; Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (which actually dropped today) and Dead or Alive 5 (25th). Anyone besides me and Tom interested in either of these games?
Me, I've never been a Tekken fan, but I'm actually kind of excited for DoA5. It seems to be fixing a lot of the problems the series has had mechanically on top of some interesting guest characters. On top of Akira, Sarah from Virtua Fighter are confirmed and Pai is rumored. Not only that, but the new character Rig that's been shown off seems really interesting, and there's still one more rumored to be included.
Also, everyone should really play Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown.

I keep meaning to check out videos of DoA5 but I always forget. But I'll probably end up getting it at some point.

There are plenty of video's out there for you to check out, from developer dairies to tournament footage. Today actually, they released a trailer for the new character Mila:
I'm actually pretty stoked about her, since she looks to have a lot in common with Vanessa from VF.

I'm going to be messing with Helena for the first little while when DoA5 hits. Partly because she was who I used to beat people I shouldn't be beating during my little time with DoA4, but mostly because the "hardcore DoA" community is ALREADY writing her off as garbage tier in DoA5 because of some things the guy writing the strategy guide has said. I like proving people wrong. Mila does look pretty fun so I'll play around on her as well as Tina, Lei Fang, and Hitomi.... Probably a little Bayman too. Until then it's Tekken Tag Tournament 2 for me, and it is amazing...just really hard. For some reason I am complete garbage at this game. It's like I've never played a Tekken before even though I have. It's weird.

Helena's been my favorite since DoA4, which is the first DoA game I ever played. I went back and played DoA2 and DoA3 and she was still my favorite. I don't know if she was higher tier then but I'll probably still play her.

From what I understand, Helena was top tier in 4. The presence of a universal defensive option (the counter) in DoA makes teirs less important than in other fighting games though. She may be low tier in 5, but so long as you can still counter you'll be fine.
I'm just hoping you have a thing for blondes and fall for Sarah Bryant's charms.

Blondes do seem to be a trend for me in fighting games. Helena in DoA, Cassandra in Soul Calibur. I did really like Nina from Tekken for a while, too. But then I realized I hate Tekken so it became a non-issue.

I'm just hoping that you like how Sarah plays and are encouraged to try out VF5FS. Or you could like Pai (she was just announced like yesterday) or Akira too. You should play Final Showdown.
